Hi there, My name is Sparky and I am 47 and new to the guitar (and forums) My brother inherited my uncles electric guitar many years ago, but it has been unplayed for years. As he is not using it I have taken it on and joined Guitar Tricks to try and learn to play it. I have done a few of the beginner lessons with Lisa and I am really enjoying them.

The guitar is a CSL Les Paul style guitar, from the 70's I think, so not very new but sounds ok (to me anyway).

One question I would like to ask advice on is should I try to learn some of the easier songs while I do the lessons or finish the lessons and then try learning some songs?

Welcome! There doesn't seem to be too many comments on here. I'm new to this to at 48 but I wish I would have started sooner. I love this site.

Hi

welcome to both of you. I started last Jan and started learning songs right from the get go while I was learning chords. Maybe try some simple ones to get you started. Any song "made easy" is a good place to start. I think the 1st song I learned from the sight was Wild Horses made easy.

Good luck.

This year the diet is definitely gonna stick!

Hi Sparky,

The stuff you wil learn in my Fundamentals Courses are solid, structured, foundational guitar skills. So as long as you stay on that path, you will get a great guitar education.

Meanwhile, for the fun of it, go ahead and try some "Songs Made Easy".

Do both if you like.

As you advance along in Fundamentals, you might find some of the "Songs Made Easy" get even easier because your foundational skills are getting stronger via Fundamentals.

Have fun - Lisa

Hi all ,

Thanks for the welcome. Its a bit daunting when you have never used a forum before but I hope to use it a bit more as my playing, hopefully, develops.

Cheers

Sparky

Hi!

I believe that since your objective is to play music on your guitar (just an educated guess ) you might as well hop on the proverbial horse as soon as possible.

The main point is to get you going and master all the beginner skills (which are very useful but still very far from your guitar heroes and probably from the kind of music you listen to) without quitting.

And I find that I get frustated more easily than bored with long repetitions. So, I guess the target is to mix and match lessons (on technique, harmony, etc) with songs, BUT making sure that the songs you pick are not above the skill level of the lessons you are doing. Another thing I also tend to do is have several things going on at the same time, some lessons, some scales (with a metronome) and some songs (cutting them in chunks and focusing on specific things). For example, I am right now focusing on Lisa's open major scales, spotted I had not played enough some of the scales needed there, so more practicing on those, and struggling through the arpeggios of House of the Rising Sun, while practicing some chord embelishments on Tenacious D's Tribute.
