Hi,

I am looking for some help and tips on forming the G major chord.

I have been working through the Guitar Fundamentals 1 videos and I am struggling to form the G major chord on my acoustic guitar. It feels as if my middle finger is too short and my ring finger is too long. I find that when I press down on the 6th string with my middle finger I can't get enough curve in it for it not to be touching the 5th string as well. When I adjust the middle finger to not touch the 5th string, my ring finger then touches the 2nd string when trying to press the 1st string (apologies if this makes no sense!). I have tried using the pinky variation but struggle with that too.

Any help or advice would be really appreciated!

I have added a couple of photos below of how I am currently trying to form the chord.

Hi

I think if you work with elbow placement it will help out. Have a look at this short vid as an illustration. Good luck

Hello,[br][br]I see where your problem is. Your 2nd finger on the 6th fret is not really on the tip of the finger in the middle of it but somehow on the pillow of the finger from the side. The finger also goes diagonally rather than bent like your first and third fingers. One more thing, your entire left hand is facing towards the left side of the guitar. It should be more balanced and center facing as possible. That way your fingers will always stay on their tips.[br][br]Experiment with moving your hand and fingers until you will find the perfect position. After that you will be surprised how easy it is once it clicked with you and you will laugh of the fact that everyone finds it hard at the beginning. :)[br][br]Good luck!

Hi Andy!

Seriously though, nothing to do with elbow placement or any other Dr Elbow's Cure All nonsense IMVorE.

It's apparent from the images that you do have quite long fingers, a serious advantage when it comes to fretting guitar. But you're neither forming them correctly for that chord form, and your thumb positioning/placement is just weird for Open G that form. Get those right and the rest should naturally fall into place.

[br]Part of it is that you quite apparently don't have the tactile control or flexibility over your fretting hand and fingers yet. That's entirely normal. Like any new physical activity one is unaccustomed to, that will come with exposure and application over time.

Watch this again, and again if necessary, and note how Lisa is forming that chord.

Now practice.

[br]Make micro adjustments until you get the placement form and tone correct with the sounding of each string correct with out muting any.

If that's still not resonating with you, watch this. Note the thumb and finger placements, the nuance and minutae of which is all well described in detail reinforcing what I've already iterated.

Now practice, practice, practice.

In other words, persevere until rote.

You will get it.

But, it takes time with cognizant application. It's not a watch the 3:21s lesson once, apply and you've got it McExercise rote perfect.
