i'm wondering, b/c i've almost been playing for a almost a year now...wow the time goes by. i know a sh*t load of metallica solos and working on some megadeth but it's hard as hell. i'm getting bored and want to know something new. what kind of solos or techniques or whatver did yhou guys have? also does anyone know if the john petrucci rock discipline video is good? it looks like something good to buy. also, in order to record stuff with this sound forge thingy on my computer, what kinda mic should i have to pick up the sound of the guitar?

I had to tune the guitar to an open G, put it horizontally on my lap and play barre chords with my thumb, but I could play Smoke On The Water and Steppin Stone by The Monkees.

in a year? well.. lemme calculate:

at 200 bpm with 16th notes...about 13.3 notes a second.. that would be 800 notes a minute, 48000 notes per hour, 1152000 notes a day, 8064000 notes a week, 32256000 notes a month....

so in a year that would be 387,072,000 notes. ;)

.. and youĀ“d need aprox. 15 fretboards, 900 sets of strings, 4345 picks and 10 wrist operations

That was good. :)
After one year I was into a bunch of chordes and scales, and joined a band. Thats the only real reason I started to learn songs. I guess I could play some AC/DC and Bon Jovi, even a Van Halen song.
And God said, 'Let there be rock!'

After my two and a half years I'm now trying to tackle the solo from the crossroads guitar dual. Got the begining down, but I cant even touch the end where the Karate Kid plays.

It'll be my two year annaversary in Januray of playing guitar. And in that time I've learned fully, but forgotten many by now, all guns n roses songs (bout 50) about 10 aerosmith, 5 poison, couple kiss, 5 metallica, then maybe another 20 one offs, like stairway, since youve been gone, those type of classics.
The guns n roses stuff is the most impressive, i put the entire list on my wall n learned 3 a day over my uni easter break.
Its annoyingh cos if i learn em to quick i forget em too quick!!
At this moment i can only remember bout 30 songs, i play em on a rota while i work on my theory!

In my first year or two I picked up very little for two reasons: 1) I was egotistically fixated on trying to be original because some weirdo I knew kept copying me and making me feel like an immitation me and 2) I didn't want to discover that I might really be tone deaf by finding that I was unable to copy other peoples music by ear.
Thankfully these inhibitory factors have largely vanished but it is true that concentrating on technique also turned me into a precocious shredder about 4 years after I started.
If I couldn't laugh at myself how could I laugh at someone less ridiculous?
