How can I improve my alternate picking string skipping? WHen i play slow its easy but when i add just a bit of speed i miss the notes.

Say i wanted to play the first solo off All allong the watchtower by Hendrix ... the ending is as follows

-9----9---------------9---------------------
--12b--12b-- 9-----9----12--9------------9---
----------------11b-------------12---11--9---
--------------------------------------------11
-----------------------------------------
------------------------------------------

played @ 120 bpm
How can i acheive this

Well, where did u go wrong? Take this part...and practice it...all day long. If u wanna try something other than picking with the plectrum, why not try..."Hybrid Picking". Maybe u may feel comfortable playing with this technique onto Hendrix piece. Wanna play like him...totally like him...is extremely difficult...why not play like yourself. Maybe you can change the position of the notes to another string where u can pick it comfortably at a speed. Say you are skipping strings from 1st and 3rd...why not find a way, which u still play the same notes and octave but in a different strings...say...1st and 2nd...or 2nd and 3rd...this is possible...it work for me...I can play almost the same sound like a great guitarist can play...but I play it in my own way which I feel comfortable. Be yourself. ;p Hope this helps..

See i recently went from Acoustic to electric and when i frist picked up a pick, i played with downstrokes only. Well my right arms all beefed up now but i leanrt the right way to play is with alternate picking - even when skipping strings. That part I can't nail.

But thanx ... rite now i'm alot better i can play the whole song cept for the slide and waa pedal parts. I 've memorized teh notes ...whats left is playing it right!

The tab in your first post here is based on the "Blues Box" .. Since you play Rock (any kind of rock) you have to memorize it by hard, with a lot of variations, and apply it to different keys.

Here are some exercises

e---------5---------
b-----5-------8p5---
g-7b----------------
D-------------------
A-------------------
E-------------------

e-------------5----------------5----------
b-------5------------5---8b-----------5---
g-7b--------------------------------------
D-----------------------------------------
A-----------------------------------------
E-----------------------------------------

e------------------------5------------
b-------5---8p5--8b-------------8p5----
g-7b----------------------------------
D-------------------------------------
A-------------------------------------
E-------------------------------------

You'll find one of these variations in many solo's (at least in every Hendrix solo) , and I'm sure you can think of many more , just keep practicing.

I was having trouble skipping from string to string too so I was looking for songs that skipped all up and down the strings to help me out and I found this one and it really helped me out...its called "testing" by CKY. Hope it helps. Enjoi
