So I'm just starting out and I am doing the spider exercise that is shown in the beggining lessons. I'm having a problem though with getting every finger in place. The first and second finger in the first and second fret work mostly fine but when I get to the third finger on the next fret I just can't stretch far enoguh while still keeping the other fingers pressing down. I'm watching the instructor and I see what she is doing but I am having a hard time getting my hands to do the same thing.

I have small hands but I'm a very big man. Am I going to have a very hard time learning guitar with small hands? Is there any way I can practice this and get better?

Hi there,

Small hands might or short fingers, or even larger fingers, can all seem really difficult when you're first learning how to play guitar. This is super common, and if you take time to look around the forum, you'll notice that a lot of people have felt this way. So you're not alone!

It takes a bit of time to get used to how you should hold a guitar, or how to get your fingers to do what you want them to do. Your small fingers or hands are not holding you back, it's just awkward to play guitar at first since, it's not really a natural thing. I suggest practicing very slowly, and taking your time with it. I know that's not the best answer but practice does make perfect, and you must be patient.

If the guitar's neck is too wide, or big, it's possible you may want to experiment by playing a few other guitars at a local shop, if that's available to you.
