Tonally, the differences are huge, I've found, in the number of members in a band.
the dead at one time at seven musicians playing (2 guitars, 1 bass, 2 drummers, 2 keyboards) and it sounded very full.
Phish had 4 members, and it sounded much more tight, but a little thinner.
i just found that interesting.

I got to exampels. They are:
When youĀ“re into prigresive music 1 Guitarplayer, 1 Drummer, 1 Bass player, 1 keyboard player and singer.
Heavy metal/Hardrock type: 2 Guitarplayers (1 lead, 1 Rythm and rythm player can sing if heĀ“s good) 1 drummer, 1 bass, and one singer if none of guitarplayers our bas can sing.
Pop/Rock: 1 Guitarplayer, drummer, basplayer, keyboard (not nesessery) and one singer if guitarist our basist canĀ“t sing well.

Good question, had me thinking for a bit as I like to listen to many differnt lineups...if it's my show here's my ideal setup:
Lead/Rhythm guitarist (Me)
Singer (preferably NOT me) - who also plays guitar but isn't always active on it...ie: he puts in harmony, rhythm behind a solo...etc and shuts up on the songs where you only need one guitar (I play a lot of blues and can often get by on my own.)
Bassist
Keyboard player: (gets a 'fuller' sound, like Rush, Genesis, Theater, Grateful dead; Yes, GnR)
Drummer

I'd have to go with
1 lead singer
At least 2 guitars, at most 3
1 bass guitar
1 drummer
and keyboards possibily....Don't really matter to me though

what do you guys think of 2 singers? not that i have really any opinion on it though just wondering what you think b/c nobody said anything about 2.

Hmmmmm....2 Singers
Well, I haven't really thought about it...You could get some great harmonizing in it.
I can see where it would work
In fact, my dream would be to see Van Halen get back together with both David Lee Roth and Sammy Hagar singin...
I personally think it would be the best Van Halen has ever been....course that's my opinion. I could be wrong :D

To listen to i tend to like "twin lead" guitars, bass, drums an seperate vocalist. To play in i like basically like the same thing, but i find it easier to work with rhythm/lead guitar setup, preferably with me doin lead, mainly because its what i learned and i've not got very good timing. A seperate vocalist makes life easier because the vocals can have a harmony to the tune and stuff, following a completely different rhythm to the guitars but still fitting in.

i dont like the idea of a seperate singer. they just sing, you know, they don't play music really, not in the terms of a jam band...when your doing a 30 minute jam, theres no need for a singer, but when you do songs, i think you can get by with what you have, if they take lessons. everybody can develop at least a decent voice if they take lessons and dont have throat cancer.

2 guitars, Bass, and drums. All members be able to sing.

There's no substitute for expeience. So get out there and break some strings on stage.

ooh boy.. good voices are rare in days of degenerated computergirlie-milkshakemind music. the voice actually IS an instrument and has to be treated like one. infact vocals havent realy been pushed to the limit yet likeother instuments - you can do sooo much with it. And of course you can jam with it - even if its just blabla.

yeah i know, my point is that during a "Space Jam" type setting, what is the singer gonna do? i think its a more efficient band if the singer plays one of the instruments...obviously, if eveyrone's voices suck bad, then you will need a nice singer...but otherwise, stick to what you have, thats just my opinion.

Ever listened to a free-jazz session with vocals? try it!

I jus think that seperate singers, despite usually being better singers anyway, give everyone else a chance to concentrate and shine on their instruments. Also, from a band (ie not just jam) point of view they can usually engage the crowd better an run around n stuff.

Yes, but I've always personally admired guitarists who can play well and sing at the same time....for some reason I find it makes them fun to watch. Like Hendrix, who would play things that were nothing like the rhythm or melody he was singing.
