In the begining of the power chords tutorials (beginer, section 2) , the G5 chord (for example) is notated as 3rd fret 6th string, and 5th fret on strings 5 and 4. However, when you look up the G5 chord variations in the toolbox, this fingering is not listed. What am I missing?

There are many different ways to play any given chord on the guitar. The G5 power chord is a diad (2 notes) that consists of the notes:
G - 1st (root)
D - 5th
And anywhere on the guitar (or any instrument!) you can find those 2 notes & play them together is a G5.
In the case of the Chord Finder it's showing 5 possible places to just combine G & D. For example:

It's not necessary to play that higher G to play a G5, but Lisa is adding it as a means of helping you get your pinky into the act & eventually get to the full barre chords! So, it's a good teaching option to add that extra root note.

Didn't want to start a new thread so I'll ask this here.
Is there a quick way to tell if a chord is to be played as an open rock chord a power chord or a barre chord. And for that matter whether it's a sixth string or fifth string root barre chord.
Short of deciphering the notes on the sheet music or tabiture.
