tone switches?

errm.

on my strat, there are two 'tone' adjustment doohicky's! now the uppermost one , when turned low, i.e. position 1, the sound becomes much more deep and muffled. but i have no idea of what the second one does as it makes no difference to the tonal qualities of the guitar! are there certain combo's of the two where it could come in two play?

Are these switches, or the tone knobs?

If they're the tone knobs, then one is (as I recall) a master tone control, and the other is just for the middle pickup. Or something. Try them both with different pickup selections.

Some people never use the tone controls, but they can be handy. Set your amp a bit too trebly, then roll back with the tone control. If you then need to cut through the mix, just roll the tone control forward a little. Ta-daaa!

The standard wiring for Strat tone controls are as you already know, one for the neck p/u, the other is for the middle p/u, which leaves no tone control for the bridge p/u, later model Strats might not be wired this way as Fender has taken to producing some many different variations and models that no one can keep up on them any more....

pstring's got it right. One of the things I dislike about Strats. The two pickup, two volume / two tone control layout (Tele's LP's, SG's etc) works better for me; I can control the tones of both pickups in all 3 positions. To each his own.

The newer strats, or at least the one's I have played, are a little better; having the second knob a control for both the bridge and middle pickup. Switch to the middle pickup and use the second knob. If nothing happens, there could be a problem.
