Hello there, just logged back in and wanted to ask if anyone has any suggestions about how to get back into guitar after an extended break from playing (approx 1.5-2years gap now!).

A bit of background in terms of guitars i have: i have a classical guitar (yamaha c40), american fender strat, taylor gs-mini (electro acoustic).

Experience: have previously had 1-1 lessons so could at the time play scales, very simple riffs, etc....

Any ideas would be great and really appreciated as i have a bit of time off work coming up so looking at doing some practice.

Cheers Minesh :)

Hi minesh83,

Taking a break from playing is pretty common! I've taken breaks from picking up my guitar for months but it's like riding a bike. It's so easy to pick up the instrument and just strum a few chords, or learn a new song you like.

Be patient, and you got it. My best advice is to look for a song you don't know how to play yet, a song you really enjoy, and learn it. that's the best way to get back into things!

Yes, I agree! Start with something FUN, like a song you would love to be able to play. Even if it doesn’t end up falling right into place, it will invite you back into making music on the guitar, and open your imagination to all the things you’d like to begin working on and learn to play well.

Our site is so full of goodies for you, no matter what directions you find yourelf being called towards.

Enjoy! Lisa

Pick a song you really really love which fits realistically within your short term future refreshed or newly acquired skills remit so it is an actually attainable objective.

Then attack it with the gusto which should come easy for any song with which you are truly enamoured. Accompanied by the necessary repetitive practice, perseverance and determination, you'll make progress fast which reinforces confidence and reinvigorates motivation, which in turn provide all important medium and longer term momentum.
