How much in UK pounds would an average 4-track recorder be? Do the recorders store them in a memory first before you effectively "printing them out" via the cassette player bit? My pal has one but i couldnt work out if you record straight to tape. If you did then how would you mix the channels once they are already on tape?

I have no clue how much a 4 track is in the UK but I bet you could find one online and that would give you a ballpark figure.

As far as operation goes the one I have been using (Tascam 424 Mk III) works by recording strait onto cassette tape.

If you think of a normal cassette tape as having four tracks (stereo Left side A, Stereo right side A and then stereo right side B, stereo left side B going in the opposite direction (I don’t know if that is the right order) all the 4 track dose is use all 4 tracks going one way. Mine records directly to the tape and is very cool !

I paid about 400 US bucks
My instructors page and www.studiotrax.net for all things recording.

Axl,mine's a £150 Fostex x14,4 tracks are still about that price.

With any 4 track i've used you set the balance and level (etc) record your part, then rewind and record part 2,etc, etc.

Maybe some of the new ones have fancy Gizmos, buy a copy of Guitarist and check out the ads for features.

It's as Dr. Simons says, for most of them .

The Fostex's got 4 sliders for playback level,so you adjust those to get a mix, hook it up to a stereo/amp and record that (as you play it) as a one track recording, well, that's what we do.
