I am learning gutiar and bought a cheap $80 guitar (ONYX) a few months ago. I can do most of the open cords o.k and when the Capo is on the first fret can do cord changes reasonably well and can play a lot of songs. When the Capo comes off it all goes wrong, it feels like my action is way to high and the cords buzz. My question, are more expensive guitars easier to play, is the action a bit better and do the gauge/quality of the strings make much difference?

Hi Tigers. Have you tried playing a bunch of different guitars? If you're thinking about a new guitar it doesn't hurt to go to the store and just try some different ones to see how they feel and play. When it comes to the expensive vs cheap guitar debate I tend to fall on the whatever feels good to you is what's most important. I have a bunch of different guitars, some expensive (to me) and some not so expensive. My favorite guitar to play is my classical and that is the cheapest guitar I have. I really like the tone and it just fits my body and playing style I guess. The action is a bit high on that one as I'm used to playing steel string so I'm dropping it off at a store to have a tech lower the action for me. Just my two cents, hope it helps!
Going to a store and trying a few is the definately recommended. I was all set to buy a Epiphone SG, went to shop and after strumming for 5 mins decided I didn't like it, ended up getting a Gretsch. The feel of the guitar will be different for everyone so trying a few is a must.
I would say that a more expensive guitar will most certain be better. It should stay in tune, not have a buzz, etc. The action will be better and you always change to make lower or higher to suit. Strings that come with them again should be better but you could re-string with a better make.
Cheaper makes like Squire and Epiphone make some great guitars that wont break the bank.

Fender Strat Jimi Hendrix Series MIM
Epiphone 59 Les Paul
Pus a few others
Boss Katana Mk2 100 watts
Bugera V22 combo
Far too many pedals...
Thanks for the advice. Just took my guitar into the tech, he said it is wavy all the way up the fret board, will cost over $100 to fix, gutiar only cost $80 so i don't think i'll go down that road. Did see a very nice Martinez, they are getting a left handed one in for me to try so looking forward to that.
Thanks for the help.
