I am thinking of getting a variax guitar. I can only afford the guitar itself and not one of the line 6 fx pedalboards or variax compatible amps.

Will I still be able to use drop D tuning and others on-thy-fly tunings by turning the knob if I plugged into a ragular amp via jack cabel? Or do I need that variax network cable into variax compatible gears first and then into amp?

Problem is that none of the shops within driving range has any variax models in stock, so they couldn't help me with my questions, so I will need to buy without testing and without answers to my Q.

I think the newer models work with any amp. The older ones might need some kind of connection to a Line6 unit. You'll definitely need a Line6 unit to make use of all the bells & whistles that the technology is capable of.

I encourage you to call Sweetwater because their salespeople are knowledgable & great at taking the time to explain technical details to customers.

Having said all this, I strongly encourage you to actually try one of those guitar before you buy it. So, you ahve a clear idea of what it will do & if it even feels comfortable in your hands.

Best of success!
