I am thinking of getting a variax guitar. I can only afford the guitar itself and not one of the line 6 fx pedalboards or variax compatible amps.

Will I still be able to use drop D tuning and others on-thy-fly tunings by turning the knob if I plugged into a ragular amp via jack cabel? Or do I need that variax network cable into variax compatible gears first and then into amp?

Problem is that none of the shops within driving range has any variax models in stock, so they couldn't help me with my questions, so I will need to buy without testing and without answers to my Q.
