Flatwound strings are a pretty big change if you are used to any kind of regular wound strings.
If you are aiming for jazz tone on a Telecaster for playing chord melody (Martin Taylor, Jor Pass, etc.), I'd recommend a relatively heavy set of regualr strings, then use the neck pickup & turn down the tone knob a lot. Like almost to zero!
I use my Strat on a lot of jazz material & I can definitely get a decent warm jazz tone by using heavier strings, the neck pickup & keeping the tone bassy.
