I am Michael, and I have been playing guitar on and off since I was about 15 years old. I am 25 now and I regret not spending more time learning fundamentals because it's kicking me in the butt now. I have pretty good mechanics I believe and a descent beginning understanding of key fundamentals but not as much as I'd like. I've spent my whole time learning to play music I have been inspired by and now I would like to grow and learn to improvise and invent my own style of playing instead of feeling like a robot playing how someone else shows me how to play. So I'm giving this site a try to see if I can expand my knowledge and sharpen my abilities. When I get done, I'd like to be able write my own songs, create my own solos. With that said I am more interested in lead playing. I love rythem as well, don't get me wrong but lead is my dream. Lol.. Just putting this here to see where someone might recommend me start at on this site and what teachers would be a good fit. To be honest I've always been hesitant about spending money on teachers and sites in the past just because of experience with teachers in the past. Look forward to seeing some replies, and thank you people of guitar tricks!

Hi Michael and a warm welcome to you.

I would suggest you start right at the beginning.

OK, you might find you know a lot of stuff and you can carry on forward quickly, but there will be hints and tips that, maybe, you've forgotten. A basic refresher doesn't do any harm at all.

Also, it sets the tone for the rest of the course.

The teachers are excellent and really know their stuff.

Starting from the beginning will also show how far along your abilities are. You might progress very quickly at the start, (depending on your ablities) but you will get to a point where you catch up to your present level and you can take it from there.

I think this approach will serve you well.

Joe.

+1

I did exactly this when I first joined this site 3 years ago and it worked out well for me. I had been playing for many years and wanted to improve my lead playing and be able to improvise. I chose to go through the Blues course and exchanged some messages with Anders, who teaches the Blues course. I blew right through my plateau! It still took work and determination...there are no magic bullets...but I got there.

There's always something new to learn, so beyond your plataue will be another one waiting for you LOL. Once you blow through one, you know you can do it so it's not as intimidating.

Good luck Michaellaws92...let us know how your journey goes or if you need any help.
