Old dog trying to learn new tricks. Still on Beginners 1 but enjoying very minute and feeling I am progressing.

2 things I have learnt so far

My fingers are as soft as putty - ouch but hurt less each time

Need to retune once and a while as my heavy hand is a bit hard on the guitar

Hello Ian,

Nice to hear that you're enjoying yourself and progressing. Keep at it and you'll for sure whip those fingers into shape.

Welcome, you found the best online learning site available in my opinion. Let me give you a little trick on the finger situation. First, never start playing guitar right after you took a shower or washed dishes etc, because your skin is too soft right after those tasks. Second and here's the hint, for you and any other beginners. After you play or practice, get a bottle of simple rubbing alcohol and stick your four fingers in the rubbing alcohol and just let it dry on your fingers. For some reason by doing that, it dries out the skin faster on your fingers, and you develop the calluses you need on the tips of your fingers, faster than not doing anything at all and letting them develop. I think you will find that you will have calluses develop within 2 weeks using the alcohol after you play guitar. Hope this helps.

Thanks good tip, will try that. Fingers are improving and I do not have that burnt feeling anymore but I do need to build them up more.

Hi Ian and welcome,

Yeah, painful business learning guitar but it passes and things get better. It's like you have to go through a painful initiation. When learning any new physical activity the muscles have to be developed it's no different when learning guitar.

I'm glad you are enjoying it and making progress. It will all come together in time.

I wish you every success and happy days.

Joe
