Hello everyone! I am a newbie and have just begun to learn the guitar. I have a basic Epiphone Les Paul model. When I try to hold the guitar with the strap on my shoulder, the neck keeps wanting to droop towards the ground. I find it awkward to try to fret the notes while trying to hold the neck at the same time. Any suggestions/help?

Hi, I got some good tips from this site: http://www.fretjam.com/how-to-hold-a-guitar.html

Lisa also goes over some tips early on in the beginner lessons.

Good luck!

Study up...search GT and the web. There are 'accepted' ways to hold a guitar, but no 'one' way. I use a modified classical position myself as it helps me with my large dreadnaught acoustic. A benefit is that should I stand and play the guitar is in the same position as when I sit and practice. Your issue might simply be strap adjustment. Check out Lisa's and Chris's videos.

Guitar position and posture is important...something I learned way too late.

Have fun!

Thanks guys. The main problem I am having is the strap is slipping on my shoulder and the neck drops. Perhaps I need to get a different strap, one that is not so slippery?

Update; I have ordered an new "non-slip" strap and have found a better sitting position to hold the guitar.

Try to fixate it with your right (picking hand) elbow!
