Can I force videos to low-res?

I am in an area that is only served but mid-speed DSL and one of my daughters is constantly on Netflix. The result is a lot of buffering with the resolution set to auto. I can manually drop it a step of two and the video plays smoothly. The next video is back to auto,, is there a way to control this?
