I picked up the guitar for the first time about 8 years ago. I was in the military and deployed and I needed something to occupy my mind....so I decided I wanted to learn to play the guitar.

I was on a short 120 day deployment and I used my time well. I learned a lot of basic chord along with some barre shapes. I could play some basic songs (poorly) and that’s where is ended. I didn’t progress much for the next 6 or 7 years until I finally retired and moved back home in 2015. Civilian life proved to have a lot more spare time in it and I needed something to fill it all. I got out the DVDs and lesson books and started back at it. I think I learned a lot more over my 6-7 years off than I originally thought. I feel like I'm learning at a much more accelerated rate than during my deployment. It’s been about 12 months since I started taking my playing a little more seriously. I feel like I've improved dramatically over the last year. I'm at a point in my learning that I feel like I need assistance.....or structure. I still place myself deep into the “beginner” category. I can fluently play songs like Incubus’s “Drive” or Pearl Jam’s “Nothingman” or “Daughter” if that gives you any idea of my skill level. I know the major scale, 12 bar Blues, and a few finger exercises that I’ve found on YouTube. Other than what I’ve found online I’m completely self-taught. I don’t have a musical bone in my body so I’m sure I have a million bad habits.

I did my research and it didn’t take long before I was pointed to this website. I jumped in feet first and purchased 12 months of access. At this point the guitar has become an obsession for me. I no longer hate the sound of myself playing and every single bit of progress that I make is rewarding.

My first question is…..Where do I start?

Hey & welcome to GT!

You should figure out where to start with the Core Learning.

You might want to look through the Fundamentals 2 course just to see if there's anything you might have missed. But, since you already have some skills you may be ready for the Rock style course! Start with Rock 1 & dive in!

At the same time you should start looking through the GT song list to find songs to work on. Look for things that interest you. Look for things that are at your skill level to build your repertoire. Look for things that are a little above your skill level to give you something to work toward!

If you have other questions, please ask! Best of success!
