Guys,

I just joined guitartricks to see how the songs work for me in my attempt to self teach. I have been learning guitar for just under 1 year and can manage the rhythm playing all ok. Although I want to get into lead and melody playing. e.g. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OzeoJlzkkPE

What I have noticed thus far on guitartricks at difficuty level 1,2 songs is that they are all rhythm coaching with some lead part. But essentially there is no "Melody" tab/tuition.

Is it how it is for all songs at higher difficulty levels too?

I have joined mainly to learn melody/lead songs but this is what's my feeling in last 2 days of exploring:

1. All songs are rhythm

2. These are quite old and classic songs. There is no new latest hit songs. Perhaps copyright issues. Like Alan walker, one direction, shawn mendes, Ed Sheeran, Sia etc.

is this correct observation? or am I missing something that I should explore?

Thanks

Sam

Your best path is to work through the rock courses in order to learn those techniques & ideas.

After learning those core skills, then you can start to learn simple lead, solo, melody ideas from other tutorials & from songs!

So, the instructor teaches the song they way it was played by the artists.

The song you linked is a rearrangement. The guitarist is playing what was the vocal melody in the original song. So you could do the same thing with other songs. But GT songs are taught in the original version of the song (or the most popular cover, but still with vocals).

Yes, in most of the song lessons we teach what the guitar player plays. Not the melody that the singer sings. Which seems like what you are after.

[p]Yes, every song we teach has to be approved by the artist or their publisher. We can't teach any song unless we have explicitly contracted permission. In the case of some newer songs, the newer & more popular it is the harder it is!

Hope this helps! Please ask more if necessary! Best of success with your guitar learning. :)

You've got the rhythm, timing and chord progressions of the songs you like? If so then I'd focus on doing entire songs that you like. Do your own cover. Lay down a backing track with simple drums or just a click track in something like garage band. Do the rhythm track and then figure out the solo. It's good for your technique, ear, timing and helps you with theory. Learning in this way keeps up with the pace you learn and it gives you the opportunity to focus on your weakest areas as you are doing everything in the song. At least it has worked well for me. If it proves to be too difficult, then default back to basic lessons on the site here. Good luck. :)
