It depends a lot on the style of music. At the very least, I will use a volume boost. Typically I will engage my tube screamer if I'm not using it already. I will also add delay sometimes to fatten up the tone.

Something else I do a lot is on my Les Paul I'll switch to my neck pickup, especially if I'm soloing up around the 10/12th fret and up.

I should add I typically play blues based classic rock.
