If I were to dedicate 30 minutes of practice per day to only the physical aspects of playing (speeding up my scales and arps.), what kind of progress should I expect? I'd rather not hear that it's different for every person, etc., but rather, what kind of progress have you made (like in B.P.M. for eighth notes) on such things as scales, chromatic runs, arpeggios, etc and how much time per day (average) did you put into it?

I have never really practiced to increase my speed. But I guess you'll get a lot of results if you only spend practicing scales with a metronome to increase your speed for 30 minutes per day.
One of the result would be carpal tunnel syndrome I think, and also, being unable to play something in a solo that wouldn't sound like an exercice.
But I think you could increase your speed by 60 BPM in a month, but then, you wouldn't go farther for a while. You'd have to play something else, then come back to it.

CTS in only 30 minutes a day? Some people on this board play for hours a day, so I doubt that I'll get CTS... I wish I could find the time to do that, but I have school and a job... I wouldn't apply the exercises to my soloing though... I just would like to have the ability to play really fast if I wanted to. 60 BPM faster would be great, and any faster than that would be getting too fast to sound good...

CTS is not due to the time you spend playing, but to a repetitive motion. And exercices to increase your speed are repetitive, since it's what allows you to go faster.
Also, what comes up in your playing is what you practice and listen to, almost unconsciously. So if you play speed exercices, you'll come up with them in your playing.
But you don't have to listen to me, after all, I'm just a purple slug...

Well, damn... I guess I'll jsut be content with my current speed. I'm happy, because I just found an old text file on my computer where I wrote down the fastest I could play a couple exercises about a month ago, and I just tried them out again, and I can play them 10 BPM faster, even though I haven't practiced them (I haven't even played at all in he past week and a half due to a nasty cut on my left hand). Hey, lalimacefolle, what's your name mean? I just finished my second year in French. I'm guess it's "la limace folle", and that means, the foolish something... what's limace? btw, have you taken a look at my latest post in songwriting?

about this speeding up thing, i managed to speed up from 440 notes a min(7 a second) to 760 a min(about 13) in one month, just shredding, and running through the chromatic scale for ages, even when i was downstairs watchingTV + stuff, I'd be doin it, walkin around the house with ya guitar. Pretty sad I know but hey it worked. My advice is to set your sights really high, I saw malmsteen as my target, and i acheived it.

So chromatic runs, alternate picking and lotsa a practice, as much as possible

I got from 19 to 24 notes a second by working on the 'flight of the bumblebee'. Now I can play any scale I like, noone can decipher the notes, so it's cool...

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, an illness due to repetitive motions.

Lalimace, how long did you spend (in time that passed, and in hours on guitar spent during that time, like it took you two months at one hour a day) on working on the Flight of the Bumblebee to get that speed increase?

Honestly? Maybe a week for 1 hour everyday. But it was some kind of coincidence at the time that I clocked myself, there was a thread somewhere that asked how fast you were, so I clocked myself back then, then after that. Maybe I'm not that fast anymore, maybe I'm faster, or maybe I have been faster.

Here's something I have recorded on the 6/6/02

http://la.limace.free.fr/mp3/6-06-02.mp3

Try to clock the fast licks to check out... :D (actually, this song is based on 'tasteful' licks rather than just speedy ones, but there are some).

stretch your wrists and hands before you play.....then cts wont be an issue for you.....but you gotta put more thatn 30 minutes into practicing....guitar takes years of long hours to acheive speed and accuracy.....try a penatonic run like uhh... E 5 8
B 5 8
G 5 7
D 5 7
A 5 7
E 5 8 can you read that?.....i hope so.....this will build speed quick....
