I am 56 years old, and I have been playing my guitar for about a year this time through. I've picked up the guitar and set it down more times than I can count. But this time, it's forever!
Here's my question. How do I find like minded people to play the guitar with? I'm leaning towards Bluegrass, but I'm open to just about any style but heavy metal, because that's not me.
Any Suggestions?
Thanks!

Hi RussSnell111,

Glad you're going to stick with it this time! It all depends on the area that you're in but Craigslist can be a great option for finding others that want to get together and jam. Lots of times you can find jam nights at your local dive bar for blues or bluegrass that can be fun.

Thanks Ben!
The Craigslist idea is a great one. I don't do bars for personal reasons. My skill level isn't that high yet anyway, but give me a month! I have played in farmer's markets and for small groups of friends and family. I was hoping that if I could find like minded people we could encourage one another! I even have a great place to practice!
Thanks again for your input!

I got involved with a band by participating in a program at a local guitar store called "Adult Rock Band". It's been a year and the band is still going, though I had to leave due to time constraints. School of Rock has similar programs.

Another option is to put yourself out on bandmix.com. You can also search bandmix.com for people looking to jam.

Are there any open mics in your area? Around there, they have some at music stores, not just bars. I've been to a few and it's really fun to rub elbows with fellow musicians.

Hey Maggiar!
Thanks for the ideas. I haven't seen an open mike night since we've moved to Wisconsin. I've done them before. I'm not really good of a guitar player, but I'm not terrible either, and I am working on it. That's why I'm looking for people interested to practice together rather than a band. (That may come out of this later!)
Thanks again!

Hey Russ... Join the club. I can relate to having difficulty finding people who want to jam. "Open Jam" is a good suggestion but I (for one) have worn that road out pretty well with few positive results. It's an advantage that you have a good place to play. Keep your eyes/ears open and have your chops polished so when you DO get an opportunity you're ready. Good Luck !

Hey Fretsmith!
I appreciate your encouragement! I plan on practicing every day. I'm just looking for some likeminded people who just wants to have some fun with music! I'm sure I'll find a few that will be interested. Thanks!

If you'll have trouble finding anyone, make yourself more 'visible' so other people can find you. Put your add in craigslist (or some other site) maybe even put some flyers in local bars where musicians go. or something like that. this will definitely help you.
good luck
