Hello everyone!! I recently discovered this website and I can already tell it is a gem. I just received my first guitar yesterday (on Christmas) and I am elated. I have been a fan of music and dance since I can remember. Unfortunately, I never got the opportunity to learn an instrument when I was a child, but I have always been drawn to guitar. I do feel silly because before 2 weeks ago I couldn't tell you much about a guitar at all. Now I have an acoustic (classical), acoustic-electric, and an electric guitar in my living room. I recently made changes in my life that have allowed me the time to learn alongside my son.

I do have one question.... is it normal to have to repeatedly tune your guitar when it is new? I don't know if it is because the tuner is very sensitive or I just don't know what I'm doing...

Anyway... I hope to be online as much as my free time allows in order to learn, and I look forward to interacting with other players

Hi PurpleLily3, welcome to Guitar Tricks! With any new guitar, the strings will stretch and you may need to re-tune several times until the guitar "settles in".

Best regards,

It's great to be here, and thank you for letting me know. For a moment I thought I spent good money for a dud. Tuning it this morning took a lot less time.

It also depends on what kind of guitar:

Your classical guitar has nylon strings, which can take WEEKS to settle in (because they take a while to stretch to their full length). But once nylon strings settle in, the guitar will stay in tune for months.

An electric guitar takes less time to tune (you only have to stretch and retune a few times), and you can get it to stay in tune in a matter of minutes. But you usually have to retune an electric guitar every couple days at least.

Some people stretch the stings before they even put them on the guitar, but I like to put them on and then stretch each one (by pulling it up and away from the fretboard).

Good luck!
