I had one a few years back and it was a great playing guitar. the pickups were a little muddy and not my favorite but the guitar/neck/quality overall was excellent. wish I still had it.

I didn't know about this. I wonder if JM will actually change what he plays on stage or just keep playing the older fender guitars he already owns.

I talked to someone at Sam Ash about this and they told me that he will continue to play fenders but the "rumor" is he's talking with PRS.
I picked up another mayer strat that plays great. love the neck on those. the modern C necks just lack something. the mayer strat feels like a REAL Stratocaster. IMO

I think some musicians keep and play guitars (and amps) they like while others play those brands they have 'agreements' with. Many others do both, I bet.
Another question that arises from Mayer's earth-shaking news ;) is what is Fender's role in all of this? Or another company's? Did one deal sour while another grew sweet? I can't imagine any pro ditching a brand in toto when we all 'know' that individual instruments have individual sounds sometimes quite independent of their logo and musicians often have long-term love relationships with individual guitars.
Maybe PRS is offering an individualized, custom treatment to Mayer. I know PRS does custom amps for musicians...tweaking for the sound they want...maybe they do so for guitars as well.
Kinda related... I noted with surprise the absence of Fender guitars at the McCartney concert this summer. I counted 14 guitars played by Paul and his band and not a Strat or Tele in the group. I'm not sure that means anything/is meaningful but...given the since-forever pervasiveness of Fender in pop and rock I was surprised.

"It takes a lot of devotion and work, or maybe I should say play, because if you love it, that's what it amounts to. I haven't found any shortcuts, and I've been looking for a long time."

maybe it is some kind of political statement/disagreement? Maybe they don't agree with some kind of business they feel Fender is employing/not employing? Interesting about McCartney.
