I should have said my thoughts on sweeps are really applied to me. I never found them useful for me. I also think too many shredders of the 80's etc did them 'just because' ya know...it was cool to do. If you can do it like Jason Becker then it's a different story. A good sweep can be dramatic if done right and moreover, thematically.

[QUOTE=bbzswa777]But I spend a big chunk of my time developing my sweep picking ability, which is pretty much at square one right now. How long did it take you to develop this technique until you were happy with it?

I'm a guitar player, that never happens... ;)

Which is kinda true. I never really got to where I thought I was worth a darn but that is reflected in where I put my practicing focus.

With that said, I played a lot in those days and did lots of hand strengthening exercises for warm ups. By the time I started trying sweeps, I had already been playing solid for about 6 years anyway so it was just a leap from there. My comfort on the fretboard was already there so to do a recognizable sweep was a matter of maybe a couple of months.

...long enough to realize that the time I invested wasn't going to be worthwhile for me to master it.

This is post is right on the money! Thanks for chiming in. :) I demo my scalloped Strat in this vid & discuss some of these issues.

LOL. :D So true. At least ten, if not more. Especially your guitar playing friends. :p

Wow, great Becker find. Sweeping was typical of & often overused by some 80s rock guitarists. But it has much wider applications! It can be & has been used in classical, blues, jazz, pop. Check these out.

Yeah if I had to name one person, when talking about sweep picking, it would be Jason Becker! In that Cacophony video you shared, he's only 18 or 19 years old.

That's exactly who I was thinking of as an example. He's a beast. Apparently Marty Friedman would show him something really difficult that he had been working on, and Jason would just immediately do it, even better! If he could have kept playing, there's no telling what he would have become. But he was already a legend even at 19 years old.

To me, thinking back when I didn't play guitar, I had always assumed fast sweep picking was the most difficult technique to master, because it sounds much faster than anything else. But now it's starting to look like I'm going to be able to do it. Things are clicking. It's weird, for a few days I won't see any progress, and then one day, out of nowhere, I'm way better at it! Muscle memory almost seems like magic sometimes.

I've been playing guitar for 51 years
The way that you are teaching the newbies here I consider it wrong
Kids today want to learn lead
I've been playing the rhythm my whole life
I also want to learn lead
And when I see these musicians playing lead they only do it with two or three or more strings also they had never ever new one thing about scales

I suggest you break it down when you post tabs separate the chords and lead
Putting chords and lead together it's confusing.

At least separate the two then post another one with it altogether

I guess I'm confused (because I'm a newbie).

Are those notes part of those chords listed above them?

Took me a long time. Realizing every doing is not ment to be redone. With studio mastering and all the equipment at there Desposal. It's impossible with some songs Not accounting for there use of variable recording speeds ! I've found learn your stile and songs you enjoy practice and consistency!the key to happy music making !
