I was faced with that same dilemma so instead of making a choice I am taking both at the same time. That means it takes longer to complete either of the two style courses but the total time spent completing the two should work out to nearly the same.

EDIT OF ORIGINAL POST\\ I believe the two courses complement each other.// And, of course, technique is technique, chops is chops; what serves one style can serve the other.

If you have the time to practice both, consider giving it a go...

I wanted to practice lead type of stuff all the time, but I forced myself to learn open and bar chords as well. And I realized that learning chords first is probably best, because it really strengthens your hands, which is something you need for rhythm or lead. Playing lead will eventually strengthen your hand too, but I believe fingering chords will do this faster.
