I wanted to practice lead type of stuff all the time, but I forced myself to learn open and bar chords as well. And I realized that learning chords first is probably best, because it really strengthens your hands, which is something you need for rhythm or lead. Playing lead will eventually strengthen your hand too, but I believe fingering chords will do this faster.
