Hello, I am a total beginner with guitar and decided to pick it up and make it work. I am 39 years old and have never played a guitar in my life, but I'd like to get to a point where I can play around the house and make it sound like music.

I'm a lefty, so I bought a Yamaha FG720SL which I got yesterday. Tuned it and am ready to start playing. I signed up for my 24 free lessons, but it seems like there isn't a really logical starting point. I want to try this out before committing, any recommendations on what lessons to start with?

Welcome to the site! I had been playing off and on for the past few years just trying to learn songs with no real idea why I was playing particular chords and had no real understanding of how guitar works. So I started with the core learning system and my passion for guitar grows with every lesson. Chris makes it real simple and you can work at your own pace as well as asking any questions through the forum and you'll get multiple answers. But like I said start with core learning level 1 and just progress through those lessons and you'll be making progress in no time...just stick with it and know that frustration is to be expected when starting just don't worry about it. Everyone goes through it.

Also there are some good lessons in the Art of Practice that give you some good pointers on how to stay motivated and good ways to keep practicing.

Hope that helps, Enjoy!!

Hi briozzy

(AndrewJames2121, I fully agree with your advice but briozzy isn't a full access member so he cannot view these lessons).

It seems you do not fully get the point of these 24 free lessons. These are just small examples to give you an idea of what this website has to offer. These are just some random lessons from Guitartricks which shouldn't be played in any kind of order because they are for promotional purposes only!

If you are really serious you can sign up to be a full access member. Then the core learning system is the best starting point if you have never played guitar before. These are structered videos which will take you from the very beginning and it's suitable and made for those who have never even touched a guitar before!

But since you aren't a full access member yet you cannot access these lessons.

And also there is a money back guarantee. So don't feel nervous about signing up. I'm sure you'll be pleased.

Unless things have changed since I was a full member, you can cancel at anytime. I signed up for a month, then a year, then got side tracked with home renos and took at break... but have no regrets getting the full membership. I got a lot out of Lisa's acoustic fingerpicking lessons, and Christopher's lessons are great as well.

Yep. I realized that I needed to just join. The 24 lessons are cool, but too advanced for a total beginner. I joined yesterday and have started at square 1. Hard to be patient with learning at my age, but I'm giving it a try.
