If you have a reasonably decent combo amp with a little overdrive on it, you can pretty much get that. Neck position > A little heavy on the amp treble > dial in a little overdrive. Doug may have a coil tap on his so it gets that twang but even better to that tone is a single coil sound.

That tone has more to do with spending time dialing in the tone than finding effects to emulate.

My thought, anyway.

I found an awesome country tone with a telecaster in the neck pick up position, a little overdrive or no overdrive but definately a compressor pedal. It sound great through headphones or an amp. Have fun.
