It's pretty simple. Decide where you want to go with your instrument and then dedicate yourself to reaching that destination. All it takes is a little dedication (or a lot).

Here's the problem:
Either you are a guitarists' guitarist (shredder, or a virtuoso) and people that don't play the guitar think your music should be banished from the airwaves, or you make music that lots of people love, and musicians consider you have sold out and consider that your music is just like Britney Spears'...

Now, that's a dilemna: make music for the sake of being a really good guitarist (but only to guitarists' eyes) or just making music that's listenable to (Eric Clapton, or Santana are considered as the ultimate guitarists by lots of people, and Jimi HENDRIX like a god, even though noone can tell you three of his songs)

'nuff said bout that.

yeah, just keep goin, dont stop, thinkin about tommorow...ah fleetwood mac...-anyways, that phrase does mean something. dont stop thinking about guitar, and always find ways to get better. like with me, im preparing myself in solos and improv and all that to jam with other musicians. how can you 'prepare'? Learn as many keys of the major scale you can, all across the fretboard, but memorize them to the point where you dont have to think about it when someone says "key of A" or "Key of D". Once you get that far, just look for more ways to branch out.
