Old Dog trying to learn a new trick
I am a 63 year old man who has an older brother that I have always sort of idolized since I was a kid. He started singing and playing guitar as a teenager and did so up until the was about 35 and then just quit. Stopped singing and playing completely for about 40 years. About 6 months before his 76th birthday he decided to stop again. He rigged a makeshift recording device in his home and has started singing again and he hasn't lost a thing when it comes to his voice (inspite of having cancer 18 years ago and having his left lung removed). I have purchased a guitar and am going to try to learn to play it and not tell him until I do and surprise him by playing for him. If anone is interested he has his recordings on www.soundcloud.com and his name is Fred Steward. Also I created a video to the recording of him singing "I Believe" and it is posted on youtube.com. Just search youtube with "I Believe by Fred Steward". Wish me luck in making this happen. I can't wait to see his reaction when I play the guitar for him the first time.

Hi JStew,
Glad to have you on board. I'm sure you will find many useful tools at this site to help you on your path of playing guitar with your brother. I just went to youtube and listened to him sing " I Believe" and it was excellent. He has a real God given talent. If you need anything, all ya gotta do is ask. All of the instructors are great. They all have something to offer in your learning process, so try to check them all out. Good luck an I wish you and your brother all of the singing and playing in the world.

Hola! And welcome!
We're about the same age and, although I didn't start from scratch, I did re-start after not playing since '76...over a third of a century!
So my story is kind of a blend of your and your brother's stories. Further, my story is highlighted by a very happy and successful time on GT. I'm a great believer in GT...you bring the guitar and time to practice, GT will take of the rest. :)

"It takes a lot of devotion and work, or maybe I should say play, because if you love it, that's what it amounts to. I haven't found any shortcuts, and I've been looking for a long time."
