the pup I'm replacing has 2 wires, the replacement has 4 (green, white, red & black). I think I should use just the red & black but would like to avoid a mess with resoldering. Any help?

Two of the wires are used for coil tapping. Usually the red and white ones. they should be soldered together. Check the manufacturer's specs to be certain which colour.
...so ever since then, I always hang on to the buckle.
