I need help with my side-side vibrato, I gather that the technique is this:

you fret the note with the tip of your first finger, pivot your fretting finger against the edge of your finger where it touchs the bottom of the guitar neck and rock your hand side to side with the remaining fingers splayed like butterfly wings (hence the name sometimes given "the butterfly vibrato".

Now here's the question:

Should the string be moved away from the natural (unsharpened) position upwards, downwards or a mixture of both? I gather that one way may be easier (i.e. up for the top e String, down for the bottom) but for strings were you can move either way is it best to stick to one or the other?

I really want to crack this has anyone got any tips for practicing this?

If I couldn't laugh at myself how could I laugh at someone less ridiculous?

You can do it either way.
There's a good exercice on http://www.vai.com shortly, it's about trying a vibrato for an hour straight, only one note... Pretty hard to do, but lots of ideas happen.
