Hi,

as a full member you should try the Core Learn system lessons. There are basic lessons , very helpful in what you're looking for. Mainly Guitar Fundamentals 1 will answer all your questions on this subject.

Primarily you can start figuring out if you´re pressing the strings next to the frets, so close, but without touching them. I think this is the number one rule. Of course it will be not possible all the time, like when you´re executing some chords, however you must try to do it whenever it may possible.

See if you're pressing the strings with your fingers almost perpendiculars to the strings. Use only the force needed of fretting notes in a way that notes sound clearly, nor more, nor less.
:) Azzi.

Be kool and stay free.

Yes, Guitar Tricks. Its a lot cheaper then going to an institution and as good (better in a lot of scenarios). Its in my opinion the best place to start as a newbie with the core learning system and the blues/rock/country style lessons they have.

After that go visit institutions if you still want to. I for one prefer playing/learning with a real person then with videos, but look at me, i'm still a full suscriber on GT and will continue to be because there's a lot of great material to learn here.

the most important thing to know as a beginner is that the same problems that you're having right now - every one of us here have been through that. these are normal things, so don't get discouraged. stay with it.

most of the problems that you're having with making chords ring out is probably due to hand strength and positioning. Make sure you are pressing down on the string squarely to start. it may feel awkward but it will help you to keep from muting other strings...

lastly... practice, practice, practice...

Just to add on all the great advice here. When you feel you've properly fretted a chord (maybe a D as an example) individually pluck each string seperately. Each should ring on its own without any interference.

If there is, you might be accidently mutting strings with parts of your finger. If its not that then its probably just finger strength which only improves with time and practice.
Alternatively (unlikely) the action on the guitar is too high. Thats the space between the string and finger board. Too high action makes it very difficult to fret the string and get a clear sound.

I'd safely say its just a matter of finger strength. Hang in there, it gets easier ;)
