Do you think when in a band and your jamming in the key of C perhaps, when it comes to solos is it ok to have the scales in front of you? I mean i was just wondering is that what guitar players do, look up a scale and try it out or do they know all the scales!! because i thought that would be a cool way to learn!! i sit with the, for example, C major, and C pentatonic and jam on them, move from one to the other and stuff, but i probably wouldnt be able to do it as well without the stuff in front of me. Also, do you think guitar players know the names of scales? slash uses the C ionian in nightrain, do you think he learnt it as that name or as a scale he discovered on a record too. I only knew it as a the scale thingy from nightrain until recently!!

there's no right or wrong way to learn/utilize the scales, everybodies brian is wired differently (take Lali for instance)the important part is that you embark on the learning process.
After the 50th time of looking at the sheet to see the fingering for C major something magical will happen, you'll no longer need to look, you'll have memorized it. Once you memorized the ist one the rest come much easier.
If you think back you were probably asking yourself the same question about chords, do I have to memoize them or can i look off a sheet, I think you probably no the answer to that one by now! Good Luck!!

so many different ways to be creative. sometimes i'll
be playin and thinkin of the chops as chords and move
the center of tonality in ways which i suppose are
illegal but sound good anyway. some guys play only by
ear and know nothing bout any theory. its nice to have
theory in yer head and know as many scales as ya can
but the fun starts when ya fill in between the 'correct'
stuff and start playin stuff that contrasts the theme.
try playin yer C ionian for a sec then just pick 3 or
4 notes outta the blue then play the C ionian again?
i think ya start minin gold when ya can play without
thinkin in terms of scales n yer fingers play the sounds
yer head is thinkin. takes a long time to get there though.

Your right, that is the final destination, to play what you hear, and to hear what you play before you actually play it. It is a long process though.

Scale=Theory.
Its better to take a few notes from a scale and try
and make up little melodys with them.
And about ear players playing with out knowing theory
thats krazy because if thier playing music thier useing
some theory if they only can play happy birthday.
Axl when first starting out with the guitar you should
try and memorize everything you can so you don't have to
look at paper for it.Memory is one of the best things
to have in becoming a great guitarist.And useing your
ear is very important also the two go togather.
Unless you just want to sit around and say hey i know
all the scales the rest of your life.
