favorite mode and key

What is your favorite mode and key and why. My favorite is a D phrygian because I can get an exotic sound I usually do a D because I play in drop d so when I'm going pizacato I can use my thumb to pluck the d as a bass note

Actually, both of those are "pizzicato", not "pizacato".

I would've expected better of myself, having seen it spelled nearly every day for the past six years

C Lydian! :)
Also, a little off topic, but Pizzicato is more of a plucked violin sound in classical music, and violin strings don't ring much. *plunk!* So you can emulate that by slightly palm-muting the strings with your right hand as you pluck them.

Big fan of D dorian!
Not sure why but I find is nice to work in. It really doesn't bother me what key I'm in so much when I'm on the guitar cause I'm just thinking in shapes but if I transfer on to piano then I have a preference.

For now I love 5th mode of A Harmonic minor because it is so Yngwie sounding!

The Lydian mode is always cool to work with, it has that space-like sound and adds dimension to lead playing. Also, throwing in a Dorian note in a blues jam is fun too.

I definitely will try it! :) But does it have to be in A?

My bad, any 5th mode of Harmonic minor will do. If you do 5th mode in A Harmonic minor you will be playing the V(7) chord in the key of A HM which is and E or an E7. Then one must play the A HM scale over that one chord and you will get that sound I mentioned above.
In the Key of E HM the V(7) chord is obviously B or B7.

I've been loving Melodic Minor - usually G Melodic Minor.
Been toying with diminished options as well and trying to see where that can be used. Definitely fun times!

Joe

Melodic Minor has such a bad ass sound to it! Love George Bellas for it :)

I like E Phryggian as well. I also really enjoy Dorian, because of the major 6th in the minor context, it's awesome. I would say I am also a big fan of Lydian and Aeolian. Also, you can't go wrong with major! :) Learn them all and develop your voice in all of them! It's well worth the time.
The other day my friend who is a great jazz guitarist played something in mixolydian to me and it sounded like the Simpsons, it was absolutely amazing and I loved it. Now I want to go get good at Mixolydian so that I can make jazzy Simpsons-esque riffs!

Yea, that's Phryggian DOminant! Gotta love it! I'm mostly obsessed with phryggian dominant for the harmony, not so much for the melody (well, hey, doesn't that make sense?). That E major instead of E minor in E phryggian, is just great. But when playing melodic ideas in phryggian, I don't usually play the harmonic very much unless I want to include the two half-step neighbors to E (f and D sharp) but anyways, yea, happy soloing guys!
