Yes, you can often use it instead of C major. You will of course alter the sound a bit, and sometimes it may sound out of place - especially if all the other chords are standard "cowboy chords" with no embellishments or extensions (like the 9 note in Cadd9).

Just use your ears and you'll be fine. :)
