Hmm.. I have this little problem.. I like to compete in everything and with every one.. I KNOW! IT'S STUUUUPIIID!!
But that's my nature.. :)

Soo.. This is my question.. What did you play when you were/are 16?

I myself play Paganini (24 caprice) Jason Becker and Symphony X.. Yeh..

Have fun trying to remember ye oldies! :P

"Inside Looking Out" by Grand Funk Railroad (pre-Locomotion, when they were a great band).

Good luck finding it, newbie. :D LOL

im barely 14, but i play grateful dead mostly. but i have this thing for breaking songs out into really long pieces, so whenever i feel like breakin into a solo inbetween verses i have to pause the tape because they play a few seconds later, and you get the point...

I was into Metallica at that time.

I hope you got some sound clips to back up that "I play Paganini and Symphony X at 16" thing :)

Cause if you do I'd like to hear some, I Love Paganini stuff and Symphony X is really good.

Post some tricks of paganini, I know they were looking for some classical guitar tricks.

I got the fourth caprice (or somthing like that) for violin in tabs

Benoit, check the paganini thing I posted.. It's of very bad sound quality and the distortion sucks big time but there's something.

Second theme for the 24 caprice, first part... String skip, legato, gap sweeping, tapping, I almost feel like I'm Allan HOLDSWORTH

Nice.. I have done that with no tapping like this.

E ----8-12-8-------------4-7-4------------
B --10--------10--------5-------5-----------
G ----------------9-----------------4----------
D ------------------10-----------------6---------
A ---------------------12-----------------7--------
E ----------------------------------------

E ---8-12-8------------------
B -10---------10---------------
G ----------------9-------9-----
D ------------------10----------
A ---------------------12--------
E --------------------------12-

Did you listen my string skipping? I would love to have some feedback..

the tapping section was to match the articulation of the violin, but it is possible (and recommended for the technically challenged :D ti play it only using sweeping)

I don't know FretSlug, it was fast no denying that. But to be honest it sounded kinda sloppy. Do you practice with a metronome?

I've got a vague recollection of GFR (no not Guns and FXXXin Roses) from when I was 17, but, that year is vague with a capital W (for "Wasted").

Ok, we were about 10 yrs behind the popular scene, but wgaf.

http://www.guitarboard.com/view.php?id=2721&type=bass is about all i can find.

If'n' I remember right they are what a ROCK Band should sound like (and CCR and the Stones) and what Boston could only aspire to be, but who am i to speculate...Dude, you got those memories flowing like water.

What was their big song , my memory is like a swiss thing with holes in :D

Man, when I was 16 I had eight regular session gigs playing all the parts of Bach's Goldberg variations at once on the guitar and I could play every piece by everyone you've ever heard of - especially those you haven't heard of so I sound cooler for speaking in a reverential way about a band that you don't know. Oh, I started playing about 3 months before my 16th birthday. I think I was learning chords still and trying to play along to my favourite U2 albums.

I know it sounded quite sloppy, especially the string skip system... But if you listen to the violin variations and Becker's 24 caprice on the acoustic guitar you notice, that the parts don't go with the exact tempo all the time, but I know, it was not so good..

Thanks for the comments!

Grand Funk Railroad was Mark Farner (guitar, electric piano, and vocals), Mel Shacter (bass and vocals), and Don Brewer (drums and vocals). Mark used to play a Gretsh Rock Jet (Les Paul type) and swing it around his head while he was playing the solo for "Inside Lookin' Out" with only his left hand. Their big hit from the early era was "I'm Your Captain/Closer To Home" from the "Closer To Home" album.

"Mean Mistreater", "Limousine Driver", "TNUC", "Hooked On Love" and "Mark Says Alright" were great songs from this period. Probably their best stuff was on the "Survival" album, with "I Can Feel Him In The Morning" and the version of "Gimme Shelter" that the Stones only wish they could have done.

Ahh... memories....... :)

Lordathestrings, I know i've heard "Closer To Home" ,but, it all gets tangled up with my dim recollections of ELP and Mountain songs. See

http://guitartricks.com/forum/showthread.php?threadid=3501 for a vague explanation.

GFR cds will go with Steely Dan on my "to get" list.

Cheers.

When I was 16, I was trying to learn the 'Crossroads duel tune' (unaware of the actual speed, I just found tabs that sounded good). I used to be into speed and stuff, but today when I listen to Paganini, what strikes me the most are the slow parts. Also, I prefer Vivaldi.
