I've never played the guitar before but I'd like to get into the melodic death metal genre. So after the the core guitar lessons, which direction do you think i should go?

Just a suggestion, maybe you could try first playing some Rock and from there, you can proceed since you are a beginner.

Well anyway, that's only a suggestion. Cheers and good luck with your guitar lessons and learning!
At my blog I write about guitar playing and other related topics. Tune in to get some advice on how to learn guitar chords and more.

I agree with carlos-k. Melodic death metal is great music, but usually pretty difficult to play. It would be very beneficial to first go through Rock (and Blues) to both develop technique and see how much different metal/rock styles actually have in common. To go through blues will especially help your soloing a lot!
