56 Year Old Newbie
Been taking acoustic lessons for a year from a great teacher. I am ready to jump to another level and trust GT can help get me there. Once a week isnt cutting it and I am glad to belong to a larger community of folks that have a passion for the music. Thanks in advance to all the instructors, I just signed up!!

Way to go Ed. I'm also a late starter... not quite as late as you, mind you :) I am 46 and trying to get beyond simple chords and the campfire. Got a tele this year and would like to be able to play some blues and jam a little.

Bruce, that gives me a lot of hope. I'd love to play with friends in a band but figured I got in too late for that. What kind of music are you playing?

I just started to learn (again)
About 35 years ago I got as far as grade 2, classical guitar with weekly lessons.
Injured my hand in a motorcycle accident, and never got back into it, raising a family and no time to practice anyway.
Now I'm retired and practice a few times a day and study for hours (when my fingers get too sore to play anymore.) :-)
Hoping to at least reach a listenable level before the grass grows above me.
This seems to be a great site.
Glad to be here, or as George Burns used to say "Glad to be anywhere"

Nope, not too late! We play a very broad range from Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, Merle Haggard, to Stones (several), Ramones, Better Than Ezra, Social Distortion, Eagles, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Journey, Spin Doctors, etc etc.

Hey Bruce, I have been playing over 5 years and would be frightened to death to do a live gig in front of lots of people, you are doing really well. do you play acoustic or electric?
Rock on bud.

Hi, Pete. I was a little, but just a little worried the first time. I was doing just two songs that I knew well. I also got to warm up with the band a bit which really helped me to relax before being called up later. After the two songs they asked me to stay for two more, one of which I knew pretty well and i'm still not sure what the fourth song was. I just watched the chord changes and tried to keep up!
Once we started our own band it was even better because of course we had all the fun practicing. The hardest part about doing the gigs was dealing with all the complications of the PA, mixer, power supply, etc. The playing was the easy part! I really encourage you to hook up with some buddies to play. It's a lot more fun and you'll learn a lot too especially if you have at least a couple more experienced guys.
I play an electric guitar in the band (Strat), but I play an acoustic at home a lot.

Hey I dont want to steal Petes comments you gave him but I am in the same shoes. I did play out years ago and now I am heavy into Blues. I always said to myself never say the word "Never" It comes back and bites you in the ass!
I hope that word is safe on here. Any way I give you credit for getting out there Bruce. I am messed up with a few disabilities from Nam but I would like to do it once more. I play every day and try to add something new every day. I cant remember it the next day but I am having fun and this is what playing the guitar should be about. You should not play guitar because you want to be cool or get women. Its something that has been a true friend to me for 50 years now. I told my son when I die to at least display one of my guitars at the viewing, maybe the 65 Jag my Dad bought me when I was 15 years old from Manny's Music in New York City. We used to take a train down town from The Bronx and hang out at the store and try and catch some rock guys that were popular. I did get to see The Lovin Spoonful at the store. They told us to watch Ed Sullivan show that they were going to be on it. We started cracking up but guess what I tuned in and there they were. Cream Hendrix, Beatles, Vanilla Fudge were all big influences for me. Hey it was the 60's. I got to see Jimi at Hunter College, unbelievable!! Well I spouted off enough. I will play as long as my body lets me and then I will study and watch Rock Videos until the day I die, Belonging to this site is doing me real good and helps me stay grounded, You are all a great bunch, including the instructors so keep rocking, Pete (also)

You guys are all youngsters compared to me. I'm 60 and started 2 years ago. Doing well enough to impress my grandchildren around a campfire with simple cords. Thought I'd be satisfied with that, but now that I got a taste of it, would like to learn more. Took private lessons, but my particular instructor did not have a plan. He'd ask me what I wanted to learn, but I didn't know enough to know what I should learn. I like the way GT is organized. I can look at the program and work towards goals. So far, it's working well for me. Hope it works for you.
