Hi,

Guitar Tricks is amazing and it's even better now with the awesome song tutorials. I recently took advantage of your offer to purchase a full year membership for a discounted price (thanks!)

I was just wondering if you had any future plans to update your video player so that your videos play on an iPad? Or perhaps have plans to create an iPad app for members to watch your videos? It would just make my Guitar Tricks experience even better if I could just whip out my guitar and iPad anytime, anywhere and continue to learn new songs.

Love what you guys do here!

Hi, thanks for your question. Looks like quite a few people are interested in it.

We are really disappointed that Apple won't allow flash on the iPad. If they did, our site would work already and you would be happy.

In order to make our site work with the iPad without flash, we would have to make a big project out of re-encoding the videos. Right now we are focused on filming the songs, and don't have people/time for a re-encoding project.

Hopefully Apple will soon make peace with Adobe and support flash and all will be well.

Just another vote for iPad support.

Apple mostly likely will never support Flash. I know it is a lot of work to re-encode videos, but guitar tricks on the iPad would really be a great application.

Apple has made it quite clear that the Ipad/Iphone will never support flash video. Can you at least make your new video releases viewable on these devices?

I'm also putting my vote in for this. I don't have an iPad, but I do have iPhone. I hope you can support mobile lessons in the future. :o

Ditto on the Apple will never support flash. Read Steve Job's "Thoughts on Flash." I know it would be a lot of work, but if you had an app that allowed your videos on the iPad/iPhone platform, I bet your subscriptions would double. We are at the beginning of a HUGE trend in mobile computing. Don't miss out.

A mobile friendly layout for guitar tricks and no flash would be awesome.

I don't use an I-anything but being able to pull out my phone and easily use guitar tricks as a reference would be great!

Thanks for the reply. I'm a web designer, so I do understand the work involved. I also understand that new song videos are your priority.

When you feel it's time to work on a site upgrade, I hope you'll consider an HTML5-friendly video-player, and/or an iPad/iPhone Guitar Tricks app. I have to agree with the other posters: Apple isn't going to come around -- those who want their content to be viewable on Apple mobile devices are going to have to update their sites.

In the end, I'm not sure Apple agreeing to offer Flash on their devices would even solve the problem. As a person with a Flash-friendly Android phone, I have to say, the mobile Flash experience is very poor. Flash is extremely frustrating to watch on my Flash-enabled phone. For example, if you watch Lisa's video on your homepage on my Motorola Droid, the video is extremely choppy -- even with wi-fi. It would be almost impossible to learn by watching her fingers in a tutorial video. The sound doesn't even match the video.

One site that has done a nice job upgrading their video is Lynda.com. Those videos run beautifully on the iPad and on my Droid. Other sites, not wishing to upgrade all of their content, created an app just for viewing video. They may not include ALL of their content (take the ABC app, for example) but they include enough to keep users entertained.

Anyway, I'll be sticking around -- iPad compatibility or not -- I love what you guys do here, and I've learned a ton! I'm looking forward to even more lessons -- keep up the great work!!

I really enjoyed the site for a few months but since getting an ipad I just don't carry a computer around with me anymore. I hate to leave but am unable to use your site. I hope this changes, I like what your doing and would be back.

While I understand there is alot of work involved, why not just create a Guitar Tricks app? Right now reality is that Apple will never support flash and many user's including myself love our ipad's and Guitar's;-) Fact is fact, Apple's ipad is not going anywhere and after Christmas that install base is only going to swell. Here's hoping that the New Year will bring the much needed HTML 5 Support we crave.

listen to yourselves,,,mabey you people should consider changing from your beloved apple device /phone instead of asking a website to conform to your desires. It's no different. you knew the devices capabilitys(or lack of) before you bought it or not ? now you want people to make up for that on their side?

Flash is a very popular and useable format.

I have an android phone and can view flash just fine
one of the many reasons I own it.

That's all well and good Stymye, but they do have a very good point. Just because other products are available doesn't mean that Apple products don't sell like hotcakes and have a very very large userbase that GuitarTricks is currently missing out on.
I've a little experience in webdesign so I do understand why they would shy away from "upgrading" the whole site - it is a big job, but in the long run I would definitely say the extra userbase (and by extension, revenue) will make it very worthwhile and the sooner they get on it the better.

A bit of a labored process, but here is how I watch Guitar Tricks videos on my iPhone:

1) Download the flash video file from the site (use the download option in the video viewing screen on the particular Guitar Tricks lesson page)

2) Convert the .FLV (Flash) file that you have just loaded to .MP4 format using a video converter software package - I use Free Studio by DVDVideoSoft as it is free! :-)

3) Copy the .MP4 movie file to your iPhone via the iTunes application

4) Play the lesson on your iPhone

This worked perfectly! Thanks!

Has everyone seen the video from Adobe showing the new Flash to HTML5 converter. It appears to make it easy to convert to HTML5. Will this help expedite things on the ipad?

All of my lessons are encoded using the h.264 codec, which should work on the iPad. All you need to do is change the file ending from .flv to .mov

I don't have an iPad and haven't been able to test this though, maybe someone with an iPad can test this and see if it works?

Thanks, /Ben

Has any of you Ipad folks even kept up with what Apple has been doing? I mean really? I've seen Apple come out with an item that EVERYONE has GOT to have and then in a few months that very item has been made obsolete because they've just release the next version of it.
Each and every Ipad, and Iphone and Ipod they've ever made has lasted but a few months with the technology that they decided is the new norm. How the hell do you expect some sites to keep up with this multi-billion dollar company that changes it's norms more than they most likely change underwear?
Some of you were on the site before you had your Ipads and Iphones and have decided to pick them up now and yell, "Can you do this? Can you do that?" The folks here at GT are working on a limited budget unlike the folks over there at Apple.
Apple not only has thousands of people working in their program and design departments, but, also in their production and sales areas. These teams are CONSTANTLY being told to come out with something new each and every month! And you want someone whom has made something has worked, and still works on what has been set as a "norm" to try and keep up with an ever changing gadget?
PCs still rule the "Norm".
Yes, it would be nice and convenient for every gadget to be able to work on everything you want it to. But, to basically demand other places such as GT to stop what they do, which is to teach folks how to play guitar, and start pumping out technology so that next month you can be complaining that they are lagging in their attempts to keep up with your next gadget. Wow!
The world really has raised a bunch of whiners and "gimme now" type of peope... kinda reminds me of that spoiled little girl from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.. that Veruka I beileve her name was... "I want it all and I want it now!"
The post earlier from GT said that they would try and do something about the problem. But, Apple isn't making things easy for people who have already set things out there. And they aren't making things easy for people to keep up either!
That's another good reason to stop and rethink YOUR position on things when you purchase something. Questions you should ask yourselves before you buy it... I don't think you'd run out and purchase an Electric Car knowing that there wouldn't be any place to charge the batteries would you? Would you purchase a hair dryer knowing full well that you're bald and have no chance of that hair ever returning? Or even would you buy a snow sled living in the middle of a desert and never have a chance of seeing snow? So then, why would you jump on the bandwagon to purchase this "Hot" item that not everyone is up to speed on just because "it's the latest cool thing out there?"
From my readings, the Ipad is pretty much locked into it's own little world just as they did with all the OTHER Apple products. Why all these other Netpads are becoming so popular now as they USE Flash and so on.
Just some things to think about before you're standing in line for another 8-12 hours to purchase the next "cool" thing.

Use your common sense God gave you, and some manners. Demanding things because YOU want things done NOW doesn't do anyone any good...I understand you want to get on to the greatest instruction site for the guitar when you are out in the world and stuck on something... but...

FYI...
I'm a media producer at my 9-5 and although I don't care for Apple... the usefulness of the iProduct line for guitarists is well past ignoring. If you guys need a plan on just how to optimize/rewrite/re-encode all this...
Drop me a line. I'd love to support this.

And don't think of it as this horrid monster of a project, which it is (let's be clear), but think of it as your way of reaching out to an untapped resource of additional users.

I'm even working on App programming now, again not an Apple fan, but even my 9-5 can no longer ignore the customer base that isn't being tapped into.
