Unfortunately, the guitar world has always been dominated by the right handed. While there are many guitarists that play left handed, the vast majority of lefties play right handed instruments. I have met many, many left handed players that play right handed guitars. This is due in part to the vast majority of instruments being right handed, but to me there seems to be another advantage. While both of your hands on the instrument are doing new things, the hand that is fretting, playing chords, etc. is the one doing the most work. If you are left handed, that hand is the most developed and therefore as a lefty you have a bit of an advantage on a right handed instrument. Use this to your advantage as much as you can. Truth to be told, either way you start out and whatever type of guitar you choose, you are starting something new and it will require an equal amount of practice either way. I truly feel you will settle into whatever is most comfortable over time. So, I would say try playing a right handed instrument at first and if a left handed feels better; go with that. You will work through the obstacles and develop into a great player whatever avenue you choose.

Hi Enderki and Douglas!
Personally, I generally recommend that all beginners learn on a standard guitar, whether the player is left-handed or right-handed.
When learning guitar, just like most any other musical instrument, both hands have plenty to learn how to do. Both hands will be developing strength, skills, and coordination. In most cases I've seen, no significant advantage is achieved by using a lefty guitar. In fact, I believe it can present a disadvantage.
Learning on a standard (as opposed to a lefty) guitar insures you will be able to access 95% of the guitars you come across in life. Playing spontaneously at a friend’s house or party, trying out the shiny new guitars in a guitar shop; these activities are open to those who play standard guitar.
Left-handed students who learn on left-handed guitars are dependent on finding these guitars, which are a rarity.
My two cents - keep us posted!
Best wishes, Lisa

Hi enderki ,Get what feels natural to your hands. I'm new to the guitar and left handed like you. to me a right handed guitar feels totally uncomfortable to be honest. Just feels wierd and unorthodox...like trying to shoot a basketball with your right hand ( left hand point guard).
Although it was my first time, when I picked up the lefty guitar in my hands in position, I felt like right at home, like it was meant to be, so to speak...lol.
but thats just me though, It might be different for other people...so yes, I'd probably say...get what feels right to you and comfortable with.
good luck!

Agreed, and nice advice Cam! Again, it is about what feels the most comfortable at first. Both ways for anyone bring to the table some sort of uncomfortableness, but you know when something truly feels awkward. While the guitar world is dominated by the right hand, there are still plenty of options for left handed players.
Best of luck and Happy New Year!
