Welcome back to music theory grade 2, this time we're going to be looking at intervals to build on those in grade 1 and we'll also be looking at composing simple 4 bar rhythms. Less intense this time and hopefully more enjoyable – you also get the chance to finally apply some of this material directly.

Intervals

First, a little recap from grade 1. When you play two different notes, one higher and one lower, the distance between them in pitch is called an interval. If the notes are played one after the other, it is a melodic interval whereas if the notes are played together it is a harmonic interval. You can measure the size of an interval by counting the notes between the first and second. Remember when counting to include the first and last notes themselves, so the example below shows a fifth:
