Welcome back to music theory grade 2, hopefully you've recovered from the barrage of keys last time and you're ready for an easier ride in part three.

Having looked last time at some new major keys and introduced the concept of the minors, we will now look at triplets and the grouping of notes and rests when writing music.

You can check out the parts of grade 1 here if you missed them - and part one of grade 2 here . So, on with grade 2...

Triplets

If music is written in compound time, 3/8 for instance, a triplet feel is implied – there are after all 3 quaver beats per bar in 3/8. We can get the same result by using triplets in normal time by using triplet notation. The basic rules for this are that the 3 notes should be played in the time 2 of them last so for example 3 crotchets would be played as a triplet in 2 crotchet's time, or a minim beat. In the two examples below, the first lasts a crotchet beat and the second a quaver with the '3' over the notes denoting the triplet:

If you need to use a rest of less than a beat, always group notes and rests in beats, but without using more rests than needed.

And that brings grade 2 part two to a close. Next time, we'll look at more intervals and also at composing simple four bar rhythms. Until then, as always take the time to review and join all this information together, and please PM me if you have any questions...
