Hi i recently started Speed Mechanics for Lead Guitar from Troy Stetina and i think this books is just what i need assuming that im at some point of playing kinda struggling with my speed bariers and i wanna do it right and get fast shreding style as the pros do.
Ok so my eng. is not that good mby i speak it better than write it but i guess we we'll be as clearer as we can..

Btw my word was , even tough i started practicing from this book i want to ask you for some tips i dont know how long should i stay on one exercise and how many exercises should i take per day i practice 6-7 sometimes up to 8 hrs or more and i got the first section for left hand almost done even tough i cant play top speed but i can play some mid around 110-120 bpm so again the question is how long should i take up on one single exercise and how many exercises per day should i take..
I plan and i already started one exercise from the right hand section - that's alternate picking..

Thanks i hope i can take my playing fast enough like 1 year of playing more , im preaty good at playing almost everything from rytham guitar i can play even some solos that are not lightness fast like enter sandman solo i can do it than some of the sad but true solo , sweet child o' mine and some more not that fast stuff but i cant even think about one or pantera's walk xD i just get sad there , i practice with metronome i got to mention i know how important it is ..

ThanKS!

I think you should even out your left hand and right hand excercises everyday. Make sure you dont practice your left hand more than your right, or your right hand more than your leftm cause this can lead to being unbalanced with your playing later on. I suggest you pick a couple excercises for each hand, so 4 excersises in all, 2 for your left hand and 3 for your right hand, and practice them for a week or 2, depending on how you feel with it.

If, after a week, you feel like you think you can move on with other excersises, go for it. But make sure you practice and focus intensivly.

Happy playing dude.

thx for replay at last one to help me bit with this , i got some more questions by the way ..

1.should i be aiming for top speed of those exercises im doing like 160 bpm or more or should i be moving on new exercieses every new week ..

2.i hear all about relaxation and slowing down i do that and after a while i can feel burn in my forearm muscule i dont know if i started strugling or it's just natural feel to my hand after that i try to relax and even i focus more on relaxing the hand even tough im aware of playing the exercise as needed should i stop there and take some rest i do that but i dont know if i do it right..

3.Is it natural feel that i dont rly much see improvement let's say after 2 days of plaing one same exercise , i dont see much but a little rly little change mby , is that natural and how long roughfly speaking it takes to develop some control over one constatnt tempo let's say 120 bpm or even more after practice..

4.you say 4 exercises per day , and do tham for a week than move on new one , should i get back on the old once sometimes or after nailing those down move on the next and dont get back till i end the book (some day i hope :D )..

that's all any other tips are welcome so i can improove faster i rly want to be able to play fast in 2 years if possible with correct practice ofc.

Im already good guitarist and i can solo some but not shred fast i rly love shreding.. :)

thanks i know 2 years sounds lame but let's be real with correct practice and 6-7 h per day i think it's rly possible, btw im not beginner i already play let's say 50% good and for 100% i need some more practice..
i also have good sense of rytham i can catch melody on air i can play along improvise on every rytham i hear i realy fast can adopt to any kind of melody..i think my ear is good trained so far.. and i got some speed , but not the one im aiming for .. ofc quality not quantity i know that but fast playing with quality makes it perfect..

Practice makes it perfect !

Thanks! :D

My opinion for playing fast is not just stamina. It is timing between your fretting and picking hands. If you are comfortable with scale positions and can play them without thinking too much about them and you have good hand streght built, the key is to have the timing down between the hands. Any run you want to play should be started by practicing slowly and working up to speed. Very few people can grab a guitar and play to speed.

When I was learning the Ozzy/Rhoades lead for 'I Don't Know' by ear many years ago, there is a little ascending run in the middle that was, for me, harder than it sounded. Once I figured out the notes, I couldn't seem to find the run comfortable to do out of the box even though most leads I could do after figuring them out. So, I just work on it slowed down to make the movements comfortable for me and worked up to speed from there.

I think that once your hands reach a certain strength, it's a matter of know where you are going on the fret board and practicing the timing.

1. I think you should aim to master that excersice first, and than aim for speed. Once you start aiming for speed, pick some new exciercises to start practicing, but keep practicing for speed with the ones before that.

2. Feeling the burn in your forearm muscles is just a stamina probleme, over time this will fix itself. But for now, do not over practice your guitar to the point where it can cause injuries. Focusing on relaxation is a very GOOD idea! I give you props for this! So when you start to feel the burn, slow it down a bite and focus on your relaxation and the tension.

3. To notice a big difference in a couple days of playing an excercise, speed wise is rare. Give yourself a month or 2 to really notice something greatly. This may seem like alot of time, but speed will never be reached through a couple of days.

My suggestion is, record yourself right now at the top speed your at, at the moment with any technique you wish. Practice, practice, practice and than after a month or 2, record yourself again at the top speed your at then, and then compare the two recordings. This si where you will notice much difference in your playing speed. But when you practice, make sure you practice the RIGHT technique. DO NOT half ass IT. Please! If you want to achieve great speed, you will need to master the technique first! that is why learning new excercises ever week or so may be to much.

4. Again, I stated this in the first number, but once you mastered that technique and practiced mastering it for a week, after that week is where you should start aiming for great speed. And after you learn another excercise, dont stop playing the other ones. keep playing and practicing them. I know after a while you will have lots of excercises, but try and equal them out everyday.

Dude 2 years doesnt sound lame, in 2 years you can accomplish alot of speed. ]
Are you interested in taking corespondance lessons? I am currently taking guitar lessons threw this guy and is a GREAT teacher. If you interested, please, give me a private message, or just let me know through this thread and I will let you know where to go.

I think you would be a great candidate!
