Wat's the difference between playing over a chord and soloing over a chord vamp?

I'm french, but I think a vamp means there's some kind of rythm involved. So if you plays a reggae vamp, you'll play all the up beat, while a blues vamp would involves the power chords alternating the fifth and the sixth on top... Once again, I'm french, so I may be wrong...

A vamp means the chord or chords are played for an undetermined amount of time, usually the soloist will cue the rhythm section when to come out of the vamp and enter the song form....but don't take my word for it, I'm American.
