Hi all

I looked and may have missed it so I was hoping to get a few questions answered.

I've noticed that the videos are organzied by level 'beginner', intermediate' and 'advanced'.

But what about lesson plans? Such that there is a set of tutorials that are structured in an order for you to progress through?

Also, there are other sites out there, is there anything that sets this site apart from the others?

Thanks for any helpful input!

There are structured courses, but I'm pretty sure you have to be a full access member.

I think that one of the areas that we vary from the others is that you can actually communicate with the instructors posting the lessons. We are new to the high def thing, and eventhough we have lessons to reshoot we will still take the time to respond.

I would pick us over the competition because of personal interaction, and we also have more to offer covering more genres. We all care about what we're teaching, and are not just after a quick buck. Most of the lessons I have viewed from competitors, the video looks great, but they are not accurate with strumming techniques. A lot of them don't show any technique, and those that do are often sloppy with their playing. They only give you the basics, but there's more to it than that.

Here at GT, if we tell you to block a string, we also tell you why you need to. If you learn this stuff from the beginning then you don't have to go back and reteach yourself, how to block an unwanted note to make the chord sound right. Everyone here is working really hard to make things better, and easier for the user to accomplish what they want to do. If you have more questions don't hesitate to ask, and I hope you'll join us as a full access member. Try it for a couple of months, and if you don't think that we have more to offer cancel your full accesss membership.

You can learn alot here, if you hang in there with us.

Hi Sixpicker...

That's basically what I wanted to hear. I'm joining. After I posted that post I did some more poking around the site and noticed that there is structure to the levels. That is what I was hoping to find. I didn't just want some big pile of videos to have to wade through, but rather a plan of attack.

Got credit card in hand, see you on the full access side. :)

** EDIT **

Took the plunge, I'm a full member now.

Hi SixPicker & Others

Hi From Ozz...(Land Down Under) Australia:)

I have just recently joined this site as a free member but looking to join a website to learn....i was looking at www.jamplay.com for a while but had to go away to New Zealand on holiday recently..now i'm back i need to get into learning
I'm not an absolute beginner as i know alot of BARRE chords in the different shapes and a few open chords in the first position.i did most of what i know now back when i was about 15yrs old..around 30yrs ago:))..i just decided to buy am electric Schecter guitar which i plug into my MACKIE PA System..sounds great....Only if i could play some great sounds...:)

Can someone suggest to me...as this site seems to have so many places to visit..where does a person start in this website to learn...after they join as a full member?..as i'm thinking about doin this!

Kind Regards
Mike

Hey Mike,
Pardon the late response, but I just got in from my gig. It really depends on what kind of music you want to learn to play, give us an idea and we'll point you to some lessons to help you.

Welcome all, and let us know what we can do to help you. I hope everyone had a great Halloween, we had a packed house last night.

Hi JD/Sixpicker

Thanx for your reply...i saw it a few hours ago but only just had chance to reply:)

You asked me what music i want to play...because i like a wide variety of music it's probly hard to say what i like..but i'll give you an idea...i like music from the 60's to the 80's...in Australia here we classify a band that i would like to listen to would be a 60/40 rock band..which would be a mixture of music from way back then.
I do like modern music & with respect for those that do like "Metal" it's not my cup of tea...the heaviest i go is for the likes of ACDC.Meatloaf, Bon Jovi..but i could name heaps of artists that i like one or two songs or more from..i9 even like music of Dire Straits, Billy Joel, Elvis etc etc...but i do like some of the moderrn music too.
If you ask me to name some Genres..i suppose i could say..Rock & mellow/slow Rock, Rockabilly,Blues,Swing..& maybe if i could get my head around it in the future a touch of reggae??.

Hope this has helped you with what i like....

I have a further question or two.....Is the lessons in this website structured so that it would be like going to a teacher...& i don't have to worry about what to learn next....it's laid out for me to move forward in order?

Next..do the lessons have different views/camera angles?...i watched the free lesson No1 & 2 by Bernie ferguson & couldnt really see what he was doing...are the full member lessons better than this?

Kind Regards:)

Mike,
thanks for the feedback about Bernie's free lessons. We'll definitely look into fixing that up.

To answer your question, the beginner material here is very structured, but as you get more advanced it is more difficult for us to know what material you need and what you don't. For instance, many people become good at lead before they get a solid foundation in their timing. Others skip theory entirely and have to come back to that later.

So if you went into our structured "guitar fundamentals II' course, you would probaby skip over the barre chords since you know those, but maybe you would concentrate on the theory and music reading.

We have a 60 day refund policy, so if it sounds 70% like what you need, then try it out and take a refund if it doesn't work for you. Most other sites have a 3-7 policy, which I don't think is really enough time.

Have fun!

Jon

Hi Jon

Many thanx for you reply, i read your letter of introduction...................

"Hi, my name is Jon Broderick and I am the guy who started Guitar Tricks. I am also the webmaster of the site, so if you are having technical problems, let me know and I will help you.

Wow...30yrs playing etc..and you started this site...Amazing!:)..looking at it..it is very comprehensive..I will have to wait until tomorrow to join as i need to have some money in my Paypal account (have no credit card)..so i pay thru Paypal tomorrow

You mentioned to start at Guitar Fundamentals 11 Course...maybe i will browse thru No1 to see if anything i don't know 1st

Unfortunately, i am not a good person to learn how to do "Lead" guitar..or can i call this "Improvising"..i find it near impossible to make something up out of nothing...Hope this will change as i grow!!...
Beside what you may have read from my posts so far..i also know a few scales..i think it's called Pentatonic & i think the other maybe the chromatic scale but really have no ideas how to use them, other than finger exercises to get fingers moving...which brings me to a question...

...I have been using the Metronome on my Digitech GNX4 to play finger exercises like fingers 1,2,3,4 on the first 4 frets & then moving to different positions without losing the timing to speed up my fingers..i started at 100 bpm & withing a few days i got up to around 150 bpm..but i start to dull a few strings..so i'm at around 135 to 140 bpm....but it's diferent doing scales..i can only get up to around 120 bpm on the downward run & nearly getting that speed on the return.....what is the speed of someone that can play nice "Lead Solo's"?..i know it must be alot faster?

Next.....Are the lesson videos giving different angles for teaching?.. as i find it difficult to see where the teachers fingers are placed eg as i mentioned earlier in the Bernie Ferguson free lessons..when you look at the computer screen..essentially it's like looking at what they are doing inside out or backwards because they are facing me..but i suppose i will get use to that sometime:)

Kind Regards
Mike

I try to do a few camera angles, depending on what the lesson is. I added some new lessons recently.

Here are the links, This first one is about 7 minutes.

This other one, is not as long because I'm teaching something easy.

I also put up the HD reshoots for the first 2 lessons I posted on here over 4 years ago.
