Hello!

I had guitar lessons a couple of years ago and am trying to get back into
playing. I have been looking over some of the tablature my teacher gave me
and I noticed in one of the chords: Am (sus b6) and I was wondering if you
could help me with the structure of this chord as I am having trouble with
it.

Erika

I'm not wodnerful when it comes to this stuff but from my understanding, you should be replacing the minor-3rd note with a flatted 6.

A minor is the notes: A C & E. The minor-3rd is the C. So replace the C with F, which is a flatted 6th (or minor-6th) and you should have an Am-sus-b6..

Not 100% sure though sorry...

I think that the naming of that chord is wrong (not your fault but your teacher’s)

There is no “minor suspended chord”
A Suspended chord is when you replace the 3rd with a major second ( sus2 ) or with a Perfect 4th ( sus4 )

Without the 3rd; the chord is neither major nor minor. It is Suspended. But its harmonic function depends on the context of the piece, it can even function as a Dominant chord.

Many people refer to the Sus4 as simply Sus.

So an Asus4 chord has this notes in it ( A, D, E )

The 6th is the F note….if you flat that note you end up with an E note which is enharmonically equivalent to Fb.

So basically it is an Asus4 chord.

Hope that helps. :)
