Hey there again! Everyone should still be listening to and commenting on last month's solos and of course voting! :)
This month's backing track has been kindly supplied by Maestro_Shaz. I was making one but he contacted my privately and let me know that he had one already recorded and mixed. AWESOME! Thanks for that Shaz! :)
Here is the link to the place you can download the track from.
GT Solo Assignment - April 2008 (5.5 Mb)
Hopefully Shaz, or someone else, can come and give us a run down of the chord progression(s) and key that the track is in, and possibly some suggested scales/modes to play with.

Thanks for the link, light. I can use all the backing tracks I can find (even thought I'm not big on metal.)
Hey, that's part of the fun- figuring it out for yourself. Especially since we were talking about modes and stuff. Now, what can we come up with? :)

Hi there....
About the track... Im a big fan of 9th chords.... every chord in this track I use a 9th... So here goes. The track is in the Key of A minor.
Chord progression :
1. Intro
2. Chorus prog : Am9 C5add9 G5add9 } x4
3. Verse : Am for a few bars
4. Pre-chorus : F5add9 Am9
F5add9 Am9 (this Am9 chord is the part with ascending scale)
F5add9 Am9
F5add9 C5add9 D5add9 C5add9
5. Chorus again
6. It just repeats itself again from Verse, pre-chorus and chorus and finished
The tempo is 105 bpm.... Scales recommended....hmmmmm That's up to you, but i encourage people not to stay only in A minor pentatonic as that becomes to boring.....
Hope that's clear.....
If you get confused with all the 9 chords you can simply just think of them as normal chords as in F5add9 = F5
The 9th just adds a bit more to the chord to make it sound more wider

Seems like Maestro's Backing track is a good one. My vote is to use it for this month. If it is agreed can we put the track on this thread so their is no confusion to any newcomers that might want to participate.

Hi Shaz and Light,
The Backing track is great although I am having some dramas with the download. Is it available to download from any other source?
I will have a bit more time this month and really look forward to shredding a few lines for this one.

Had a quick listen to the BT at low volume last night - great track Shaz, very conducive to some unusual outside the box playing. Spedzar and Shaz, really looking forward to seeing what you guys come up with. Not sure if I will be able to do anything yet but I REALLY want to!!! Fingers crossed I'll be back in action soon.

Ok Time for a music theory question. Looks to me like I should be able to use A Melodic Minor or A Aeolian for this track (Same thing I guess looking at the scale chart). This being in a minor key though has me a little confused since I am still working on my music theory. The scales I mentioned sound ok to me. But then again I have a bit of a tin ear.

Hi guys.
I recorded my take today and if I have the time I will revisit it as the month goes on.
Gear: Fender Strat (tuned a half step lower this time) > Line 6 Spider II 15 watts amp > Xenyx 802 mixer > Laptop.
Thanks Shaz for providing the BT.

Hey equator nice track. Started off kinda slow but then I could tell when you found your rhythm it really started to fit together from the middle on.
Cookie Monster nice track man. I love your phrasing and feel. From 1:18 on was golden when I hear a track like that I realize I need to stop using the metronome non stop and try to get more feeling into my tracks. Good stuff.

Pretty rough, just a placeholder for the moment. I wanted to get the structure down so I could listen to others. There's a couple of awful f**k ups in there still! :(

CookieMonster - I liked that take, not at all what I was expecting from someone with a name like that ( stereotyping rules! ) very cool syncopated style.
Equator - Nicely different, although I noticed a couple of trademark phrases in there! Seemed a bit noisy to me, and the mix wasn't right, the BT was too loud.
Fingerspasm - you really let go and rocked there! Opening was a bit rough then it took off. Nice smooth playing.

Can you play "Far Far Away?"
Yes - how far would you like?

Listened to your track. I liked it the most when the new guitar effect kicked in at the 1:03 mark. The backing track level needs to be kicked up a couple of db's. I know you said this is just the rough copy so you probably already know that. Looking forward to hearing the finished product. :)
Thanks for the comment on my track. I shredded just as hard as I could on that one. I had nothing left. I lost it once or twice but in the end I am happy with the progress I am making at getting faster. My bends still suck. I need to work on shaking them and getting some more harmonics and vibrato in them. Practice Practice Practice. :)
